Smartphones, Apps, and Spiritual Next Steps…

Smartphones, their operating systems, and the revolutionary idea of allowing individuals to create apps to work in that system provides a compelling picture of what Westside’s Next Steps process has been designed to do.
In short, each Christ-follower has a unique spiritual code written into them before they are born. Our Next Steps process is the operating system that helps them discover, develop, and optimize the unique spiritual code into a full blown “app” that builds the kingdom of God.
The creation mandate in Genesis was for mankind to have dominion over the world. The spiritual code, or unique “calling” God has for all of His children, is how that dominion is expressed in the development and fulfillment of the kingdom of God. Every step of the Next Steps process focuses on the unique code God has written into the individual… not on a cookie-cutter process that forces them into becoming a certain kind of disciple.
What, then, is our vision? Our vision is our mission… to lead people to Love Jesus, Become Like Jesus, and to Share Jesus. As people mature into that mission though the Next Steps process, their “Sharing Jesus” is determined by the code God has written in their soul. The app is brought to life. God’s kingdom advances. His dominion is realized.
Why is Westside in South Africa? Because God sent us the “app” that took us there. Why are we in the Lansing Correctional Institution? Because God gave us the app that took us there. Why do we care so much for orphans? Because God brought the app…
The tools we have in place in our Next Steps process to develop these apps are simple, transferrable, portable, and exponential by definition. They are habit & outcome driven… not information driven. The curriculum is the experience… not the books you read. The outcomes are the practices of a biblical disciple: regular reading and application of scripture, effective accountability, engaging both a mentor and mentee, continual optimization of character and calling, and third space relationship intentionality.
What does the future of Westside look like? I don’t know… the apps are still being developed. I do know it will be God’s vision… because we developed God’s apps!
