You Are A Masterpiece

We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.  Ephesians 2:10 NLT

Masterpiece is not a word most would use to describe themselves.  I can’t imagine many of us looking into the mirror this morning and saying, “God, you have outdone yourself with me!”

But God sees something more…  listen to what one of the poets in the Old Testament wrote;

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.  Psalm 139:14  NIV

The poet is describing God’s intricate and unique manner of creating each of his children.  He is letting us know just how special of a creation we are.

Several years ago, I studied this passage to prepare a message.  As a normal practice I did a word study on several of the key words.  The word translated “wonderful” in this verse stood out and taught me a lot about me.  It is a word that means “beyond comprehension” or “unable to be really grasped.”  Really?  Me?  Beyond comprehension?  I would agree that no one could figure me out, but that wasn’t a good thing!

But this was different.

I wanted to better understand this word, so I looked it up in other parts of the bible.  Proverbs 30:18-19 painted a picture I will never forget.

“There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden.”  NIV

The phrase “too amazing” is the translation of our word in this passage.  What are the four things that are too amazing to understand?  The first is an eagle in the sky.  He asks, “How does a bird as heavy as an eagle float?”  To put it in today’s framework,  how does a Boeing 747, which is upwards of 800,000 pounds, fly?  Science has helped us understand the physics behind it, but if you can put all that aside and look at it for what it is, it is incomprehensible that so much steel can float through the air and land without being destroyed.  It is “too amazing” to grasp.

God says the same thing about you.

You are a masterpiece, created by God and created anew in Christ.  You are far too significant for words.

The next three pictures are similar to the first.  How does a snake move so quickly without legs? How does a ship (particularly a Nimitz Class Aircraft carrier that displaces 105,000 tons of water) float?

It is incomprehensible.

God says the same thing about you. You are a mind-blowing masterpiece. You have been created “just right” to accomplish the works God prepared for you to do.  I will leave the fourth picture to figure out on your own!

Before moving on to talk about the “good works” God is referring to, and how they relate to this, I want to pose a question to you…

Do you believe what God says about you?

Do you believe that you are a masterpiece because you have been created anew in Christ?

It starts here. I look forward to hearing from you.
